Ending Violence Against Women

Violence Against Women (VAW) remains one of the most global issues, with nearly 1 in 5 Filipino women experiencing emotional, physical, or sexual violence, according to the 2022 NDHS. This reminds us to highlight the importance of the 18-day Campaign to End Violence Against Women and laws that protect and empower victims.

The Anti-Rape Law of 1997 (R.A. 8353) redefined rape as a crime against the person, emphasizing the importance of consent and recognizing marital rape. By removing its previous classification as a crime against chastity, this law acknowledges the dignity and autonomy of women, ensuring they receive justice without prejudice. It has paved the way for a more progressive understanding of sexual violence, shifting the focus to the rights and well-being of the victim.

The Safe Spaces Act of 2019 (R.A. 11313), also known as the "Bawal Bastos" law, focuses on preventing gender based harassment in public and private spaces. It includes acts like catcalling, lewd remarks, stalking, and cyber harassment, holding offenders accountable regardless of their status or relationship to the victim. The law actively promotes safer environments by requiring establishments, schools, and workplaces to adopt measures against harassment and raising awareness of the importance of respect and dignity. By addressing these everyday violations, R.A. 11313 fosters a culture of accountability and respect.

Ending VAW is not just a women’s issue but a human rights issue. By enforcing these laws and fostering awareness, society can create a culture of respect, equality, and safety where all women can live without fear.
